Understanding Caricature: Online, Asynchronous

A 10 week, asynchronous class

Instructor: Greg Houston

Mondays

Schedule: 10 weeks (Monday, March 9th- Monday, May 11th)

Ages 16 to Senior Citizen

*this is an asynchronous, online class

Caricature is a time honored form of expression and has been employed by illustrators since, well, since there have been illustrators. But let illustrator, and BAI co-founder, Greg Houston, explain it:

“Ever since I’ve been working professionally as an illustrator a large portion of my jobs have been caricatures— caricatures of politicians, celebrities, athletes, business people, historical figures—you name it. And while not everyone is interested in doing caricature (or even has a knack for it) if this is something that interests you and you have a gift for doing, it has the potential to increase the number of professional assignments you can get which, when you’re freelancing, can be crucial. In 2021, The Monacelli Press asked me to write a book about caricature because they believed it was an important part of the illustration field. I’ve developed a class based on the book for BAI”.

Understanding Caricature will be an asynchronous, 10 week class. Each Monday, students will receive an email from Greg with 2 links (one to a short video discussing the assignment for that week and one showing a quick demo). They’ll have until the following Monday (prior to 10AM, EST) to complete the finished work which they’ll then email back to Greg. He’ll email them back that same day with a critique of their work and the next assignment and video links. This will continue for 9 weeks/assignments (the 10th week will be for the critique of the final piece). It's a perfect class for folks in different time zones or who aren’t able to make a set class time as the work can be done on the students’ individual schedules (provided the pieces are turned in when due, of course).

Purchase of Understanding illustration is recommended but in no way required to take this class.

Greg Houston is the author of "Illustration That Works: Professional Techniques for Artistic & Commercial Success" (The Monacelli Press, March 2016) and “Understanding Caricature” (The Monacelli Press/Phaidon Press, May 2021). He is also the writer and illustrator of the graphic novels, “Vatican Hustle” (NBM Publishing, 2009) and “Elephant Man” (NBM Publishing, 2010)

Please note* instructors are not obligated to critique late work.
