Introduction to Illustration: Asynchronous
Introduction to Illustration: Online, Asynchronous
Instructor: Greg Houston
Mondays
Schedule: 6 weeks -(Monday, March 9th- Monday, April 6th)
Students ages 16 to Senior Citizen
This is an asynchronous, online class
This course is designed as an introduction to illustration—the art and the profession. Over 6 classes students will learn about the job of an illustrator while they create illustrations. We’ll focus on what makes a good illustration, how to construct a good illustration, how to make it communicate to a larger audience, and how to work with art directors. Students will get 5 homework assignments that will run the gamut from purely conceptual pieces designed to get the artist thinking about how to communicate visually to more realistic assignments designed to mirror real-world jobs. This will also be a great opportunity to start building a portfolio.
The class is run in a correspondent class format. The assignment is given via email on Monday and the students have a week to complete and return the assignment (the following Monday before 10AM, EST) at which point they will receive a critique (also by email). This class mimics a real world illustrator/art director relationship and is perfect for folks in different time zones or who are unable to be available for a specific class time.
We will focus on the development of various styles and techniques and students are encouraged to bring in drawing/painting materials that they would like to become more familiar with and/or proficient in using but they will not be required to purchase any particular medium. There will also be class critiques which will allow students to learn to speak about their work in a professional manner—all in a fun, freewheeling environment.
